World Soccer- Switzerland Stuns Nigeria in Finals and Claims World Cup Championship U-17

Switzerland was proclaimed World champion U-17 over Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday, after beating the hosts 1-0. This victory means Switzerland’s first world soccer crown at any age level, not to mention that they ruined the party for the locals, who were expected to take their fourth world title at home. The Swiss haven’t done this well in Soccer since they reached the Olympic Finals in Paris, 1924. The teams showed great respect for each other and the battle was balanced in the midfield as well as their defenses, which were well aware of potential offensive attacks. However, in the first 8 minutes of the match, the Nigerian came close with a strong shot from Stanley Okoro, waived off by goalkeeper Siegrist However, the Europeans responded three minutes later with an incursion by Swiss defender Janick Kamber, whose attempt forced the Nigerian goalkeeper Dami Paul to intervene on two occasions. The rhythm relaxed although both teams were alert and concentrating. But just before the break, the Nigerian Sani Emmanuel crossed the ball from inside the box, but Swiss Goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist stopped his attempt successfully and foiled Emmanuel’s plan. Entering the second half, the situation remained balanced but the Nigerian players Emmanuel and Okoro launched offensive attacks for their team. However, the surprising goal of Hari Seferovic at minute 63 revolutionized the game and allowed the Swiss team to develop a more controlling defense. In the closing minutes, the ‘Flying Eagles’ tried to force the extra period desperately. However, even playing wildly offensive, they were unable to come up with a goal. The best chance came at minute 77, when Yusuf Otubanjo crashed the ball into the crossbar and there was a commotion in the area between several players, but once again Siegrist was able to clear the ball and end the danger for his team. With many attempts but no goals for Nigeria, the Swiss took the victory with a final score of 1-0; claiming as well it’s first World Championship U-17. At the end of the game, the Nigerian coach John Obuh, expressed his sadness of not obtaining the title at home with his players but gave credit to the good work of Switzerland and hopes to learn from this experience with his team. “What you have seen is the best I could offer. I could not have gone into the field to play. I told the boys before the match that it was goal that matters and not ball possession. What has happened today has been destined by God and nothing can be done about it. You are all aware the circumstances that I look over the team, but I am happy that we were not disgraced. I think we have learnt a lesson from the championship,” stated Obuh. On the other hand, Switzerland coach Dany Ryser couldn’t find the words to describe the feeling, but stated his team was incredible in the whole tournament. “We made a dream a reality, thanks to the fact that we were very well prepared to counter the speed of Nigeria. What the team has done is unthinkable. There are no words to describe what the squad has achieved.” Nigeria came close to history making since no one team has been able to obtain four titles in this competition, but no cigar. This leaves the Africans tied for Brazil with three championships.

Does it seem like soccer aficionados speak a language all their own? It sure seems like it to me, and I’ve been playing the game for over 20 years. I put an article on the front page of this blog to help explain the most common soccer terms in plain English. Hopefully this list will help soccer moms everywhere (and soccer dads too, for that matter)to better understand what their little athlete is talking about! Click Here For Access: Soccer Terms.
