Common Soccer Terms

Soccer is also known as football in many parts of the world, and is undoubtedly one of the most popular games.  Game is played in the two halves of 45 minutes, and referee adds extra time to the halves depending on the time wasted during original 45 minutes.  Attacking midfielder plays right behind forward supporting the offense by giving passes to forward to set up goals.  Juggling is when the player keeps the ball off the ground, in the air without using hands.

Advantage rule allows referee to refrain from stopping the game for foul if the stoppage would give advantage to the team that committed the violation.  Penalty box is the area where goalkeeper is allowed to use hands, and any foul in this box resulting in direct kick results in penalty kick.  As soccer is often played between players who speak different languages, the card system was introduced as universal symbol of fouls.  The playing field is known as the pitch, the area in front of the goal is called goal area, and line dividing the field along its width is called the center line.

Charging is a type of running against the ball carrier opponent, causing imbalance to get the ball.  Shielding is a way to protect the ball from defending team and player having the ball must concentrate and cover up to get away from the defender.  Foot trap is used to control the ball using the foot, and save is the action where goalkeeper saves or prevents the ball from getting into the goal and to prevent the other team from making a score or a goal.  Punch is when goal keeper uses fists to punch away the ball from the goal and is used when he is not able to control and catch the ball.

One touch is the pass where the player gets the ball and passes it with one stroke, hence touching the ball only once.  In man-to-man defense, the players are responsible for any specific counterpart from the opponent team regardless of where they are placed on the field, but zone defense is defensive that makes the players responsible for any particular channel or area on the field.  Dead ball refers to situation when the ball is not being played while on the field such as on corner kicks, free kicks, throw-ins and penalty kicks.  The job of second defender is to cover or support the teammate who is putting pressure on the ball.

All the other defenders who are not either not pressuring the ball or not supporting the person pressuring the ball are termed as 3rd defenders.  Pass made towards the opponent’s goal is called forward pass.  Violation of rules is called foul, and in response to the foul, referee calls for direct or indirect free kick.  Switch is a strategy used when one side of field is loaded by the strong players of opposition or when players are not able to make the progress on one side or the other.

Terms on soccer standings?

What are the terms used on a soccer standings table? I know win, lose, and tie, but what about the other stuff? And how are points calculated?

Ok, here’s an example of a soccer final table for the English Premier League season that just finished (2008-2009) in May.

http://www.soccertools.com/english-premier-league-table-2008-2009.html

Let’s look at Manchester United, who won the league and are on the first line. They played 38 games, so that’s the column labeled “P”.
Then it is broken up into three sections: Full, Home, and Away. The ‘full’ section shows all 38 games and home and away each show the 19 games they played at home and the 19 away.
Under each section there are five categories: in order they are: Wins, Draws (ties), Losses, Goals For, and Goals Against.
The final two columns are Goal Differential and Points.
If you look at the Goals For and Goals against under the “full” area, Man United had 68 for and 24 against. So their Goal Differential was +44.
The points are clearly the most important item on the table, because they determine the final standings. You get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and zero points for a loss. So Man United had 28 wins which equals 84 points and they had 6 draws that equals 6 points for a total of 90 points.

Does it seem like soccer aficionados speak a language all their own? It sure seems like it to me, and I’ve been playing the game for over 20 years. I put an article on the front page of this blog to help explain the most common soccer terms in plain English. Hopefully this list will help soccer moms everywhere (and soccer dads too, for that matter)to better understand what their little athlete is talking about! Click Here For Access: Soccer Terms.
