This can sometimes be a very difficult question to answer, especially when your child is young. Do you have a large party, or should you keep it small? This will depend on a number of factors:

1. How comfortable you child is in crowds

2. How much you wish to spend on the party

3. Where you plan to hold the party.

First think about the party child. Once they start school, you are faced with the whole class scenario. Do you plan to invite your child’s whole class, or just a few close friends? Are there siblings, cousins or other relatives to add in? If you plan on a large number of guests, what about friends from out of school activities- baseball, soccer, dancing, music classes? Write out a draft list, then think carefully about the numbers. Does your child enjoy being the center of attention in a large crowd, or are they more comfortable with close friends and family? Will your child relish being in a large group of kids at their party, or will they shy away from the noise?

If you decide on the whole class option, try to avoid leaving one or two children out. It’s not pleasant for the children and it will no doubt be repeated, with your child feeling the odd one out later in the party year. You budget often will answer this question for you. If you can afford it, you may decide to invite a large number of kids, for example your child’s whole class. If, however, you have a limited budget for your kids party, a smaller party with your child’s closest friends may fit the bill. Your party space options can dictate the number of guests you invite to the party. If you and your child decide to host the party in your home, think about the number of kids you can comfortably accommodate for games, food and general party mayhem.

If you plan to hold the party in your backyard, but the weather may dictate otherwise, consider where your alternative venue would be. Work out how many kids you can accommodate in this alternative venue (which is probably inside your home!), and make sure that you are happy with the same number of guests. If you are planning to hire a party space, how many kids will it accommodate? If it’s large, and you plan on filling it with party guests, how will you feed them? Is there a kitchen, or will you call in the caterers? Does this fit in with your budget? Whatever you decide, think what your child will be most happy with. It’s their birthday party after all.

Need help coming up with a party theme?

Every year, my family has a reunion upstate ny. We have this one pool motel (approx 15 rooms) that participate in a progressive cocktail hour(s). We start at the top and work our way to the next room every 10 minutes. So I need a crazy theme but the prep work is only for 10 minutes of fame – so it has too be memorable but not super expensive. We have had the normal themes ie, laua, ireland, usa soccer, mardis gra, hollywood… I would like to have something no one else will think of – any ideas would be appreciated. It would help if you say the drink type, party favors, decorations needed, etc. My family goes all out and it keeps getting more and more elaborate!!! The memories are getting better every year. BTW the ages of those who participate are 21 to 101. Thanks.

Since the Summer Olympics are this year, you could do an Olympic theme…… Each room could do a different country who participates; and you could award Gold, Silver & Bronze medals for the best rooms at the end …. The annual reunion is an AWESOME idea!

Does it seem like soccer aficionados speak a language all their own? It sure seems like it to me, and I’ve been playing the game for over 20 years. I put an article on the front page of this blog to help explain the most common soccer terms in plain English. Hopefully this list will help soccer moms everywhere (and soccer dads too, for that matter)to better understand what their little athlete is talking about! Click Here For Access: Soccer Terms.
