Fastest way to get certified to teach when i already hold a Masters Education degree?
Hello I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice on how to get certified for teaching Physical Education at high school level. I have just completed a MS Education degree in Physical Education-Exercise Physiology only to realize half way through my course ,that getting licensed to teach in Ohio was not an option. I have applied for numerous private schools and community colleges with no luck. Is there any colleges or educational districts that will allow me to go and get certified without any more schooling. All I have wanted to be for years is a school teacher, I was a sub for 12 month last year, coach soccer part-time, but somehow I always take the wrong road. Through my Masters course I have shown academic excellence in the area of physical education graduating with a 3.92. Any information would be very helpful. I am also willing to move out of Ohio.
thats an issue with many coming into the field – those schools advertise their degrees – but they do not make it clear that a masters is not sufficient to teach.
really those programs are for current teachers to get some units and advance on the payscale.
anyways – how to fix it…. you need to be clear on the exact requirements – see them here:

all states are similar – they require 3 things:
1. a program that supplies methods and curriculum courses. They will not approve your masters for that.
2. state tests – your state requires the praxis
3. student teaching. (part of the program you enter.
so it looks like you have some schooling to continue.
take a look at the section in the link that says alternative liscensure – you *may* be eligible for this.
I say may – because in my experience this is reserved for extrememly hard to fill positions like math or special education.
some advice: go into all the district offices around you and ask about their recruiting office – or hr. Often they know which districts have needs in which areas. See if they will sponsor you – larger districts often have something called district interns where they train their own teachers – and when the program is done…they apply to the state on your behalf. this is common in only the largest cities – (historically hard to staff districts)
Does it seem like soccer aficionados speak a language all their own? It sure seems like it to me, and I’ve been playing the game for over 20 years. I put an article on the front page of this blog to help explain the most common soccer terms in plain English. Hopefully this list will help soccer moms everywhere (and soccer dads too, for that matter)to better understand what their little athlete is talking about! Click Here For Access: Soccer Terms.
