Why do European soccer players and coaches complain about fatigue when they play so few games a season?
I mean, come on! They play ONLY 38 games in the English Premier League, for example, and a few other games such as the FA Cup. Only the top 4 or 5 teams in that league play the additional few Champions League games. So, basically, it’s about 40 games per season. Whereas here in the US, every NBA team plays AT LEAST 82 games per season, PLUS the playoff games (for 16 teams) AND, there’s so much running up and down the court for basketball players, especially since there are only 5 players any given time on the court. In soccer, there are 11 players, and when the ball is far away from you, you just stand there and wait, especially the defenders! They say they run on average” 8 km or miles a game in soccer, but I think that’s not accurate. NBA players run more AND they get banged up physically each game with the elbowing, grinding, and bumping. Yet, European football players and coaches whine constantly about how tired they are by the end of the season. With so few games, WHY???
Oh, come on, you so-called soccer experts. Your answers really have done nothing more than make the case for the asker’s argument.
1. For example, C_millionaire concedes that Arsenal plays only 57 games at most per season. Well, that’s still way below a mediocre NBA team that plays 82 games without making the playoffs. Arsenal is a top Premier League side. A better comparison would be to compare the NBA champs, such as the San Antonio Spurs of last season, who have to play at least an additional 16 games in 4 playoff series to become champions, or 98 games (most likely more since they would have to sweep all 4 playoff series so the actual number of games is probably over 100). I mean, be serious, guys. Teams that are at the middle or bottom of the Premier League don’t get to play extra games in the Champions League. Can you imagine Derby County or Fulham, who are facing relegation, playing more than the 38 domestic games??? The guy who answered that teams in the Premier League play 90+ games is obviously exaggerating and either an idiot or just delusional.
2. To those of you who claim that NBA players get substituted out all the time, what are you smokin’?? Top players like Kobe, LeBron, Iverson, etc. average over an entire season something like 40 mins per game out of an entire game of 48 mins. so don’t tell me they’re having it easy. They’re playing practically the whole freakin’ game! Whereas, in soccer, once a top player get substituted out, he can’t come back in, but instead get to go in the dressing room and drive home and rest. Basketball players have to come back in after a few mins of rest and keep on playing.
3. Only a handful of players out of hundreds of players in a top European soccer league have international duties. For example, Capello has chosen 23 players for England for the next friendly game. The rest of the players in the Champions League never ever play internationally and just stay home during that time. So, having to play internationally is not an excuse for fatigue for the majority of players.
4. For the guy who answered that European teams have to travel and so get tired and the weather is different all over Europe, give me a break. Traveling in a tiny country like England Italy, or Spain to play the domestic league is nothing compared to NBA travel teams traveling from coast-to-coast, especially when the USA is as big as most Europe! Again, most European domestic teams don’t get to play in the Champions League or UEFA Cup competition so they don’t need to travel to other countries at all. Finally, don’t tell me that the weather in LA is not that different than in New York!
Does it seem like soccer aficionados speak a language all their own? It sure seems like it to me, and I’ve been playing the game for over 20 years. I put an article on the front page of this blog to help explain the most common soccer terms in plain English. Hopefully this list will help soccer moms everywhere (and soccer dads too, for that matter)to better understand what their little athlete is talking about! Click Here For Access: Soccer Terms.
