African strikers to watch out for in the 2010 Fifa world cup in South Africa

I know that we are still in the qualifying stages of the world cup but it would be good to keep track of some important African strikers in the major leagues and watch their build up and the roles they play both in their leagues and the countries they play for.

Lets start with the BBC African player of the year 2008 and the African player of the year 2008 Emmanuel Adebayor. This is one of the most phenomenal players in Africa. He is a Togolese national. He is a strong and dominant figure, very powerful and lethal when it comes to air ball. But I have one problem with him. He needs 50 chances in order to put in one goal. Ok that’s exaggerated but its close. He is not as lethal on the ground. But I am impressed with the way that he is able place the ball round keepers and his celebration dance (together with his Arsenal name sake Emmanuel Eboue) also excites me. I believe he has the will to do more. His shot is not as powerful but he can be a really big disturbance to defences. Ade we are watching you!

Another deadly striker in front of the goal is Didier Drogba, the Ivorian striker. Ok, so the 2008-2009 season has not been his best but for sure he is lethal in front of goal. I believe at full fitness, this guy can tear down defenses single-handedly and ashame defenders. He is big, strong and very fast, a rare combination of a striker. He has a killer shot which I know all goal keepers in the FA premier league dread. Try and stop his shot and either get hurt or…..read the complete article and more More information on the Confederations Cup 2009 here.

Why does Matthew Booth always get booed when he plays for South Africa?

I was just wondering because i was watching south africa play iraq in the confederations cup just a minute ago and the commentator said every time matthew booth recieves the ball he will get booed and he did. Is it because he is the only white player in the whole squad and most of south arica’s soccer supporters are also black?

I am a black, soccer/footballing loving South African. No, we DO NOT “boo” him. We are are cheering him, as he is currently one of the best players. We are saying “Booooooth”. Like all great S.A players who’s name can be cheered when touching the ball. E.g- Lucas “Rhoo” Radebe, ppl would cheer “Rhooooo” when he gets the ball. Or Mark Fish (also a white player) we would cheer “Fiiiiiiish”, or John “Shoes” Moshoeu, we would cheer “Shoooooes”. Currently, Matthew Booth is the ONLY player people cheer for everytime he touches the ball, all these examples i’ve made are of GREAT players who have retired. we love Booth.

Does it seem like soccer aficionados speak a language all their own? It sure seems like it to me, and I’ve been playing the game for over 20 years. I put an article on the front page of this blog to help explain the most common soccer terms in plain English. Hopefully this list will help soccer moms everywhere (and soccer dads too, for that matter)to better understand what their little athlete is talking about! Click Here For Access: Soccer Terms.
